History
Founded on 28 July 2014 by the Azfar Group and dropped straight into the First Division. A village side from the Absheron peninsula has since finished league runner-up three times and reached three Azerbaijan Cup finals — and lost every one of them. Twelve years, no trophy.
The turning point was 2020, when Azfar installed Taleh Nasibov as president and the former Azerbaijan captain Rəşad Sadıqov as head coach within weeks of each other. Every one of the club's best finishes has come since.
In Europe
Zira reached the Conference League play-off round in 2024-25 and lost to Hajduk Split in the second qualifying round in 2025-26.
In 2026/27 they swept Torpedo Kutaisi aside 6-0 on aggregate in the first qualifying round — Ruan Renato scoring twice — before losing the second-round first leg 1-0 away at Paide of Estonia, with the return at home on 30 July.

Three league runners-up finishes and three cup finals. Zero trophies. No club in Azerbaijan has come as close, as often, for as little.
Too small for their own home games
The Zira complex cannot be licensed for UEFA ties, so “home” European legs are played at borrowed grounds. From those neutral venues Zira have still eliminated Differdange, Dunajská Streda and Torpedo Kutaisi, and taken Sheriff Tiraspol to penalties.
Brazil trained here
In September 2012 the Brazil national team used the Zira complex as a training base — a World Cup-winning squad on a pitch beside a stand seating barely a thousand.
