History
Founded in 1959 as Toxucu — "The Weaver" — attached to the Kirovabad Textile Combine, after the Azerbaijan SSR sport committee resolved to create a club in the republic's second city. It has carried seven names since: Dinamo, Tərəqqi, Kəpəz, Dinamo again, Kəpəz, Gəncə, and Kəpəz once more. The name comes from Mount Kəpəz, the 3,066-metre peak above Lake Göygöl.
The 1990s were golden: three championships, four cups, and an unbeaten title season. Then in 2005 new owners renamed the club "Ganja" over fan objections; it was excluded from the Premier League for financial reasons in 2007 and did not operate at all for three seasons. AFFA and the community revived it in 2009, the name was restored in 2011, and it has been up and down ever since.
In Europe
Fourteen matches, two wins. Kəpəz gave Azerbaijani club football its European debut in 1995 away to Austria Wien, and Yadigar Süleymanov's goal in that match was the first ever scored by an Azerbaijani club in European competition. In 1999 they became the first Azerbaijani club to win a Champions League match, 2-1 over Sloga Jugomagnat — though they still went out on away goals. Their only tie victory in thirty years came against Dacia Chişinău in 2016.

The Invincible Armada
Under Mehman Allahverdiyev — coach from 1993 to 2003, and the man behind every trophy in the club's history — Kəpəz went through the entire 1997-98 season unbeaten: 26 games, 22 wins, 4 draws, 67-10, and the cup as well. No Azerbaijani club has repeated an unbeaten title season.
The Historic Derby
Kəpəz v Neftçi, first played on 26 June 1962, is Azerbaijan's oldest rivalry. Underneath it sits a real Soviet-era grievance: Ganja supporters have always maintained that Neftçi, as the designated flagship of the capital, was routinely allowed to take the republic's best players — including Ganja's own.
The best crowds in the country
In 2015-16, in the second tier, Kəpəz averaged nearly 15,000 — almost triple the next-best club in Azerbaijan — and set the all-time Premier League attendance record of 20,400 against Qarabağ in February 2016. The old ground was demolished in 2023 and the club spent two seasons as nomads before the new stadium opened in September 2025.
