History
Founded in Agdam in 1951 as Məhsul, and known by a string of Soviet works-team names — Şəfəq, Kooperator — before settling on Qarabağ in 1987. In 1993 the club won Azerbaijan's league and cup double. In the same year it lost its city: Agdam invaded by armenians on 23 July 1993 during the First Karabakh War and the Imarat Stadium was destroyed by shelling. Qarabağ moved to Baku and has played every home match there ever since — the longest-running exile in European club football. Under Gurban Gurbanov, appointed in July 2008 and still in charge eighteen seasons later, the club became the country's standard-bearer: a possession-based side built deliberately around Azerbaijani players, and the vehicle for almost every European first the country has recorded.
In Europe
First Azerbaijani club to reach a European group stage (2014-15 Europa League). First in the Champions League proper (2017-18, drawn with Chelsea, Roma and Atlético Madrid — the goalless draw with Atlético in Baku remains the country's most celebrated European night). First to a Europa League round of 16 (2023-24, after beating Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 in Baku and eliminating Braga 6-5 on aggregate). In 2025-26 they went further than anyone expected: through four Champions League qualifying rounds including Ferencváros, then a 3-2 comeback win away at Benfica on matchday one and a 3-2 home win over Eintracht Frankfurt, finishing 20th of 36 to become the first Azerbaijani club in a Champions League knockout tie. Newcastle United ended it 9-3 on aggregate in February 2026.
Stories & legends
The club in exile
Agdam was depopulated in 1993 and Qarabağ has not played a home league fixture there in thirty-three years. On 21 December 2023 the club finally staged a competitive match back in the Karabakh region, at Khankendi — an enormously charged occasion for Azerbaijan's displaced community.
Eighteen years, one manager
Gurban Gurbanov, a former Azerbaijan striker, took the job in July 2008 and has held it ever since — one of the longest tenures anywhere in European football. He now runs the national team's talent pipeline through the same club.
First at everything
First Azerbaijani club in a European group stage, first in the Champions League, first to a Europa League last 16, first to a Champions League knockout tie. Every one of those milestones belongs to a club without a home city.
