History
Sumgayit is Azerbaijan's third city, a Soviet petrochemical town 30 km north of Baku, and its football has always carried the name of whichever factory paid the bills — Metallurq, Temp, Kimyaçı, Polad, Xəzər. The current club is none of those: it is a new legal entity founded in 2010.
It reached the Premier League in 2011 without winning promotion. First Division champions Absheron FK collapsed financially and withdrew, and the league granted Sumqayıt a wildcard on financial-stability grounds, underwritten by Azərkimya, the state petrochemical conglomerate headquartered in the city. The first squad was built almost entirely from the club's own U-17 and U-19 players. The club's slogan is "the only team of the big city."
In Europe
Three campaigns, five matches, no wins: Shkëndija in the 2020-21 Europa League, Čukarički in the 2021-22 Conference League and Fehérvár in 2024-25. Sumqayıt were not in Europe in 2025-26 or 2026-27.

A wildcard birth
Sumqayıt are in the top flight today essentially because a rival imploded — Absheron FK's 2011 collapse opened the slot and Azərkimya's money filled it. That conglomerate's general director still chairs the club's supervisory board fifteen years later.
The all-Azerbaijani season
In 2017-18 Sumqayıt reportedly fielded the only entirely Azerbaijani squad in the Premier League — a deliberate counterpoint to the league's import-heavy norm, and richly ironic given today's squad spans a dozen nationalities.
Cross-border ties
In January 2019 the club signed a cooperation agreement with Tractor S.C. of Tabriz, a club with a large ethnic-Azerbaijani following in Iran.
